Titanic Predictions
The sinking of RMS Titanic is such a dramatic story that it is still being told today, all over the world. Most people are aware of the main causes of the tragedy – the freak iceberg and the shortage of lifeboats – but very few realize that, fourteen years prior to the accident, a book was published that set out almost the exact details of the entire incident.
The Wreck of the Titan, or Futility, written by a little known author, Morgan Robertson, appeared in print in 1898. Receiving little attention, the book tells the story of a 70,000-tonne ‘unsinkable’ ocean liner named the SS Titan, which hit an iceberg on its fourth voyage across the Atlantic. The ship, bearing a number of wealthy and powerful dignitaries, was equipped with fewer than half the necessary lifeboats, and consequently more than two thirds of the 2,500 passengers on board perished in icy waters when the liner sank.
The parallels with the true story of the RMS Titanic are immediately apparent. Moreover, there are further, uncanny, similarities between the fictitious and real vessels, in details such as the weight of the ship, the nationality of the principal shareholders involved, the time of the impact and the number of lifeboats on board.
Incredibly, this was not the only time that a prediction was made about the fate of the Titanic. A few years prior to the publication of The Wreck of the Titan, a similar story had appeared in a newspaper article. A prophetic note by the editor at the end of the piece warned that ‘this is exactly what might take place, and what will take place, if liners are sent to sea short of boats’.
In a chilling irony, this editor was one of the very passengers who perished when the RMS Titanic sank beneath the waves twenty years later.
Could this really be merely a cruel twist of fate, or was some higher power at work?
